Asthma is a long-term inflammation of the airways that makes breathing difficult. It affects almost 17 million people in the United States and is caused by allergens (pollen, dust), irritants (tobacco smoke, air pollution), exercise, infections of the respiratory system, and abrupt changes in weather. Asthma can seriously risk your life insurance costs. If you have asthma, chances are that you will end up paying more for life insurance. Insurance companies are generally most concerned if your condition will affect your life expectancy and make you a high death risk. Half of all asthma deaths occur in people younger than 65. This makes people suffering from asthma a high risk group.

If you have asthma, you can still get affordable life insurance by shopping around for different life insurance quotes. The severity of your asthma and you’re progress with treatment are used as a basis for fixing your life insurance rate. Provide the insurance company with the list of medications you are on. It will serve as an indicator of how severe your asthma is. If your condition improves with proper treatment over time, it will help to reduce life insurance costs. However, if your condition worsens, insurance companies will require you to pay more to get life insurance. The National Institutes of Health have set goals for asthma treatment, and if you accomplish such goals, your premium may go down. The list includes:
• Low occurrences of wheezing, cough, shortness of breath and chest tightening
• Asthma symptoms not affecting your sleep
• Asthma not causing a disturbance in your work schedule
• Full participation in physical activities
• Hospital stays or visits to the emergency room that are not asthma triggered/related
• Asthma medication taking effect without causing adverse side effects

If in the last three years, you haven’t suffered from any serious asthmatic attacks requiring you to go to the doctor, emergency room, or take off of school or work, your chances of getting affordable life insurance is higher. The longer it’s been since a severe attack, the easier it is for you to get a more affordable policy. The main concern is how well you respond to the treatment. By maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and taking proper medication, you will be able to lower your insurance costs if the medication has a positive affect on you but if medication isn’t working for you, the insurance company will charge you more for life insurance.
